XVIII Sunday in Ordinary Time (“B”), August 2, 2009

St. Paul today reminds us “not to go on living the aimless kind of life that pagans live.” There is a purpose to life, St. Paul says, a goal to reach, and a way of living that takes us there. There is a truth about life that we have learnt from Jesus. That truth urges us to live our lives in goodness and holiness. There is a path to follow, a way to go, a heaven to reach. Our life is a journey, and its end is not the grave.

Writing to the Philippians, St. Paul says this: “For us, our homeland is in heaven, and from heaven comes our Savior we are waiting for, the Lord Jesus Christ, and He will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of His glorious body… So then, my brothers and dear friends, do not give way but remain faithful in the Lord.”

To believe in Jesus means to commit your life to the salvation of the world. There is nothing aimless about that.
What do you do to seek Jesus in your life? How does the Bread of Life, Jesus, satisfy your hungers?

“Never let evil talk pass your lips; say only the good things men need to hear, things that will really help them. Do nothing that will sadden the Holy Spirit with whom you were sealed against the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, all passion and anger, harsh words, slander, and malice of every kind. In place of these, be kind to one another, compassionate, and mutually forgiving, just as God has forgiven you in Christ.” (Ephesians 4:29-32)
