II Sunday in Ordinary Time – Cycle “C”, January 17, 2010

When Jesus entered into the marriage celebrations at Cana, He not only took part in the joyous scene, He added to it. The presence of Jesus, His mother and His disciples at a village wedding is a lovely picture. We see them sharing the lives and the happiness of ordinary people in a domestic setting. Mary’s action was one of calm and complete trust in Jesus. She simply went to Him and handed over the problem to Him with quiet confidence. She continued trusting in Him despite His initial seeming refusal to act. It was the beginning of a miracle.

The disciple John witnessed the entire scene. Years later, when he contemplated it and wrote his Gospel, he saw a deeper meaning behind the lavish supply of wine. It is a symbol of the sheer generosity of God’s grace – God’s abundant, self-giving love, which is at the heart of salvation.

The Lord calls us by name to grow in His love within the particular circumstances of our lives. Whatever happens in our lives, in times of joy and in times of sorrow, we can put our trust in God’s unfailing love for us, that God’s grace is always available for us as we persevere along the path of faith.
