Palm Sunday – Cycle “A”, April 17, 2011

Caiaphas wanted to eliminate Jesus as a problem. Pilate wanted to keep Caiaphas and the Jewish leaders quiet, and to avoid getting mixed up in their interminable religious disputes. At the same time he wanted to keep the people happy, and so to avoid the sort of popular unrest that might have got the governor into trouble if it had come to the attention of Ceasar. “God made flowers. People called them weeds.” Have I ever failed to recognize the loveliness that God planted inside someone else, perhaps discounting his or her true value in my eagerness to satisfy my own aims? Do I ever treat people as commodities, as things, rather than as human beings that God has created, childern of God our Father, sisters and brothers of Jesus Christ? Have I played down a person’s importance, passing over and treating with disrespected someone who should have received my courtesy and consideration? Could I make a special effort during Holy Week to behave with reverence towards everyone I meet?
