Solemnity of Pentecost – May 27, 2012

When the Holy Spirit of God came down on the assembled disciples, on Pentecost day, and the disciples began to speak, they addressed themselves to people of every nation, and the people of every nation were able to understand what was being said to them. This first act of God’s Holy Spirit is a message of unity and love for all people to receive. This amazing power is a message of unity and love for all people to receive. This amazing power of speaking in different languages and of being understood was a great sign of God’s Spirit at work in the world. But even on that occasion, some people simply scoffed and talked about the apostles drinking too much wine. The world has not changed. That is why words, in themselves, are never enough. Witness is required. The testimony of a good life will speak more powerfully than any arguments or ideas, no matter how brilliant they may be. The virtues are the fruits of the Holy Spirit. If we walk in the Spirit, these virtues will fill our life – love, joy, peace; patience, kindness, goodness; trustfullness, gentleness and self-control.
